Straw marquetry, spiral plaiting and hat plaiting

About

Despite being a hay fever sufferer, my love of straw has grown over many years. My father used to tell me stories of helping with the harvest on working farm holidays he went on as a teenager in the early 1950’s. I currently live on a farm track and enjoy watching the changing seasons with the differing farm vehicles that bump along the track. My local walks are often on designated footpaths through the middle of wheat and barley fields where I can watch the growing and ripening of the impending harvest first hand.

Each year I learn more about this amazing but humble material, the stories and traditions that link us to it as well as it significance to our agricultural history.
